If you searched for "activate UAN with OTP" and hit a dead end, you're not doing anything wrong — EPFO changed the rules. Since 1 August 2025, OTP-based activation on the member website was discontinued. You now activate your UAN through the UMANG app using Aadhaar Face Authentication (FAT). Any guide still telling you to click "Activate UAN" on the portal and enter an OTP is out of date.
The one thing that changed: Activation moved from the EPFO website to the UMANG app + Aadhaar FaceRD app. The old "Activate UAN" link may still show on the portal, but it no longer works for fresh activation.
Your Universal Account Number is the 12-digit number that ties together every PF account you'll ever have, across every job. But the number by itself does nothing until it's activated. Until you activate it, you can't see your passbook, check your balance, update KYC, or file a withdrawal. Activation is the gate — and in 2026 that gate is a face scan.
Before You Start: What You Actually Need
Almost every failed activation comes down to a mismatch or a missing piece here. Sort these out first and the scan itself takes two minutes.
Your 12-digit UAN. Your employer generates this and usually shares it on your payslip or joining paperwork. If you don't have it, ask HR or use the "Know Your UAN" option in UMANG.
Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number. This is the single biggest failure point. The OTP goes only to the number registered with Aadhaar at UIDAI — not your "profile" number in EPFO. If you've changed SIMs, update your Aadhaar mobile at a UIDAI centre first.
A smartphone with a working front camera and permission to use it.
Matching details. Your name, date of birth and gender must read the same in Aadhaar and in EPFO records. Gender mismatches are a surprisingly common cause of rejection.
How to Activate Your UAN, Step by Step
Install both appsDownload the UMANG app and the Aadhaar FaceRD app (by UIDAI). Both are free on the Play Store and App Store. FaceRD runs quietly in the background — it's what actually performs the face match, so it has to be installed even though you won't open it directly.
Open EPFO in UMANGLaunch UMANG, sign in with your mobile number, and search for EPFO in the services list. Open UAN Services through Face Authentication (FAT).
Choose "UAN Activation"Tap the activation option, then enter your UAN, your Aadhaar number, and your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Tick the consent checkbox that lets EPFO validate against Aadhaar.
Verify the OTPAn OTP arrives on your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Enter it. The system now checks whether that Aadhaar is already tied to a UAN and confirms the linkage.
Complete the face scanThe app opens your front camera. Hold the phone at eye level, make sure the light is even (no bright window behind you), and follow the prompts — you may be asked to blink. If it shows "information does not match Aadhaar records," stop and check your details rather than retrying repeatedly.
Get your password and log inOn success, your UAN is activated within minutes and a temporary password arrives by SMS. Your photo and address are also pulled from Aadhaar into EPFO records. Log in at the member portal or in UMANG, then change the password to something strong.
Good to know: Because your details are auto-fetched from Aadhaar during face authentication, this method quietly fixes a lot of the small data errors that used to cause claim rejections later. It's more secure and, once your Aadhaar mobile is correct, genuinely faster than the old OTP flow.
When Activation Fails: The Real Fixes
These are the errors people actually hit, and what each one really means.
What you see
What's usually wrong
Fix
OTP never arrives
Your Aadhaar-linked mobile isn't the number you think it is (old SIM)
Check the linked number on the UIDAI portal; update it at an Aadhaar centre if needed
"Information does not match Aadhaar records"
Name, DOB or gender differs between Aadhaar and EPFO
Correct the mismatch (see our Aadhaar linking guide) before retrying
Face scan won't complete
Poor lighting, backlight, or camera permission off
Move to even light, hold phone at eye level, enable camera access
"Invalid details" after several tries
Repeated attempts have temporarily blocked the request
Wait a while before trying again — don't hammer it
FaceRD app prompt keeps appearing
Aadhaar FaceRD isn't installed or is outdated
Install/update FaceRD, then restart the UMANG flow
Stay safe: No one from "EPFO customer service" will ever call and ask for your OTP, password or a face scan over a video call. EPFO never asks for these. Treat any such call as fraud and hang up.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Website OTP activation was discontinued on 1 August 2025. The link may still show on the portal, but fresh activation now goes through UMANG Face Authentication. A web fallback exists only for a narrow set of complex data cases.
No — activation is fully self-service. Your employer's only role is generating the UAN in the first place and keeping your Member ID and exit dates updated.
Even lighting, phone at eye level, glasses off if asked, and Aadhaar details matching EPFO records solve most cases. Repeated failures can lock the request temporarily, so pause before retrying.
No. Your UAN is permanent and works for life. When you join a new employer, only the new Member ID is linked — the employer handles that.
UMANG can generate one for you through the same Face Authentication flow, provided your Aadhaar is linked to an active mobile. The new UAN then arrives by SMS.
